We are a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organization run by students and recent graduates of institutions of higher education. Its members are interested in world issues, leadership and management. AIESEC does not discriminate on the basis of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or national/social origin. Since we were founded, we have engaged and developed over 1,000,000 young people through an AIESEC experience. The impact of our organization can be seen through our alumni who represent business, NGO and world leaders. As for example one Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Martti Ahtisaari of Finland. AIESEC (pronounced eye-sek) was originally an acronym coming from French. Standing for “Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales”. AIESEC is no longer used as an acronym but simply as the name of the organization. Members of AIESEC are known as “AIESECers.” AIESEC is a global network of young leaders under the age of 30, collectively striving to better ourselves and the communities around us. We are passionate about world issues, leadership development, cultural understanding and experiential learning. The organization spans +100 countries and territories in total. In all of those every aspect of AIESEC’s operations are managed by students and recent graduates. We have operated in this way since our inception, making us uniquely “by young people, for young people”, for over 65 years. The global leadership teams are elected by the membership annually.

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who take injustice personally. Amnesty International Student Group Rotterdam was founded on February 16th, 2016. Our student association consists of creative and ambitious students of the Erasmus University Rotterdam who want to fight for human rights and stop injustice throughout the world. AISR wants to stop torture, cruelty, inhumane or degrading treatment and release people who have been jailed just for speaking out their minds. We want to protect those whose human rights have been violated across the world. AISR will create opportunities where one can gain knowledge about human rights. We also strive to improve awareness among students about human rights violations. We will provide a platform for young activists where one can come in contact with people who also want to fight for their beliefs. We organize unique and different human right inspred events like lectures, film screenings, pub quizzes and much more. AISR will create the space where one can empower him or herself to develop the skills and attitudes that promote equality and dignity. CSA-EUR

CSA-EUR CSA-EUR stands for the Chinese Student Association Erasmus University Rotterdam. CSA-EUR is the student association that interacts with those that share the same interests in Chinese culture or business. Acting as a window between China and the Netherlands, the Chinese Student Association (CSA-EUR) brings multiple cultures and talents together. CSA-EUR is a formal student organization at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, one of the top universities in Europe. One of its biggest faculties is the Rotterdam School of Management, with a ranking among the top 30 of business schools all around the world (Financial Times). History CSA-EUR is a student association which was founded by Chinese students in the autumn of 2004 (officially established in 2005) at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and is mainly intended for students who have interest in the Chinese culture. The initiative sprung from the lack of a Chinese student association at the University and moreover the presence of numerous other ethnic student associations and a large Chinese community at the university to boot. The founders felt there was a void and we believe that not only the Chinese community, but both the university as a whole and the city of Rotterdam, The Netherlands deserves and needs such a cultural and social ‘enhancement’. Therefore, the founders took the initiative of providing us with a student association that is aimed at being a social, cultural and educational as well as a career-wise enrichment of undeniably the most important and joyful period of your life: your studying years. The founders of CSA-EUR are: Ka Chun, Steven, Lok, Panayu, Poke and Wyu; all of which are Erasmus Students and some of which became members of the board. Since then we have developed into one of the biggest associations on campus, with approximately 2400 members of well over 80 different nationalities. Our community consists of different nationalities; Dutch, Chinese and other international students. The association creates an environment for its members that is aimed at being a social, cultural, educational as well as a career-wise enrichment during one of the most important and joyful periods of your studying life.

Erasmus Pride

Our Association Erasmus Pride has been around since 2011. We started as a network for students and employees of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. In 2020, we became an official association. If you're curious about how that went, you can check our news page. That made us the LGBTQ+ student association of Rotterdam. Once every two weeks, we host a social drink and throughout the year we organize an abundance of activities, like LGBTQ+ pub crawls, parties, movie nights, guest lectures and many more! The highlight of our year is the Rotterdam Pride in September, a week filled with the best events you don't want to miss. To keep the association running, we have a board that is in charge of the daily management. Each person in the board has their own tasks, but the main task is to let Erasmus Pride thrive. They are helped by our committees. Each committee is filled with active Erasmus Pride members that like to help Erasmus Pride and give back to the LGBTQ+ community. The people in the board and committees are changed every year, so everyone gets a fair chance to show and develop their skills in the management of the association. Next to our association being based around providing fun activities for our members, we have a crucial role in society. We work closely with the EUR to improve their diversity and inclusion policies. We are actively thinking of ways to educate people about the LGBTQ+ community and what better place to start than the academy. We are also active off campus. We are a member of the pride010-network, which is a collaboration of all the (big) LGBTQ+ organizations in Rotterdam. Together we make sure that the city is doing its best to provide safety for LGBTQ+ people and give advice to the municipality on their policies. So if you join Erasmus Pride, we make sure you'll have plenty of opportunities to have fun and relax. Next to that, we make sure, off and on campus, that you are feeling safe and your rights are being protected. We are a community and we got your back!

Whether the focus is on burning fat, improving conditioning, gaining strength, building muscle, rehabilitation, injury prevention, overall health or sport specific training and regardless of figure, weight, age, strength or fitness level, EZsports Personal Training offers a personalized step-by-step(/phased) plan to reach your personal goals together. During the intake we will set goals and perform a health check. Weight, bodyfat percentage, size, blood pressure and heartrate are all possibilities we can measure. This way we decide the current situation and where you want to be. Closing that gap is now our challenge. No matter the goal, at first, we focus on overall fitness; mentally & physically. We pursue these goals by combining effective, variating and motivating workouts with a personalized nutrition plan. It’s our vision for you to be independent, by creating awareness and having insight in training and nutritional principles that match your goal. This will result in you being able to maintain your reached goals and eventually set new ones. Sport specific training Every athlete will benefit from working out in their specialism in a structured manner. After analyzing the sport specific attributes EZsports will fulfill in this need. The program will be built fully in line with the demands of the specific sport. Besides optimal performance (/performing optimal) this will result in injury prevention. Personal Training Introduction Everyone with an Erasmus Sport pass will have the possibility to try out Personal Training, without any obligations, via the PTI. The Personal Training Introduction consists of two sessions; 1 intake & 1 training session. Check out the flyer for additional information. Do you want to find out what Personal Training can do for you? Send an e-mail to pt@erasmussport.nl to make an appointment. The door is always open if you want to take a look inside. Introduction The Financial Study association Rotterdam (FSR) is the study association for students interested in (Quantitative) Finance, Consulting, Accounting, and Controlling at Erasmus University Rotterdam, both at Erasmus School of Economics and Rotterdam School of Management. Each year we organize various prestigious events like the International Banking Cycle, International Research Project, Corporate Finance Competition, and the Private Equity Conference. Other activities include workshops, company visits, study trips, and company drinks. Additionally, the FSR helps professors arrange guest speakers for their courses. The FSR organises these activities for her 3400 members interested in finance and/or accounting. To make these events possible, the FSR has partnerships with over 100 companies in several sectors. Furthermore, the FSR has a strong connection with both the ESE and the RSM of Erasmus University. Mission The goal of the FSR is to create a link between theory - as taught at university - and the versatile financial world in practice. Events of the FSR are, because of our professional approach, always of high quality. This ensures that our members get the opportunity to easily find their way into the corporate world. Participation in one of our events helps FSR members to make the right decision at the start of their professional careers. History The FSR was established in 1999 through a merger between the Finance association Rotterdam 'Pecunia' and the Accounting & Controlling association 'Pacioli'. Throughout the years the FSR has managed to build a good reputation in Rotterdam and in the rest of The Netherlands. Over the past two decades, we have grown to be the largest independent study association of Erasmus University. During this time, many students have been able to develop themselves in one of our former boards or committees. This has brought the FSR a rich network of alumni. Thanks to FSR events, many students have been able to find their way into the financial sector. For more information about the FSR and our events, don’t hesitate to contact us! You can send an e-mail to info@fsr.nl or call 010-408 1830, and you can always come by our office at G3A-06. Make sure you follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

It equips the next generation for employment, to become inspiring leaders – successful agripreneurs, entrepreneurs and game-changers, regardless of their field or level of expertise. We consider ourselves as mentors, not as experts. That’s why we love bringing together people from all sorts of backgrounds who believe in finding innovative ways to solve the world’s problems. That being said, no Impact Week is possible without the help of motivated volunteers who are willing to donate their time and field expertise in exchange for an intensive intercultural exchange.

Living Room

About us The Living Room is part of the wellbeing programme. It is also a safe space on campus where students can let go of all of their stress and worries, and not study for a while. The space was created when a group of students came together in May 2019, who all had a similar idea of creating such a space on campus. First, from October till the beginning of February there was a temporary space at H12-32. This was one room furnished with leftover furniture that was already on campus. After that, there was a more temporary space on H6-02, designed especially for the Living Room. The space consists of 2 separate rooms, where one has the main function of a typical living room with board games, books, a tv, and a couch and chairs to get comfortable on. The main living room space has a side room that can be used for e.g. mindfulness workshops or drawing sessions. The room is empty which makes it possible to use it for a variety of purposes. The other room is a smaller, more closed room where private conversations can be held, and for example the student pastor holds his walk-in hours. The Living Room board consists of three students, and two EUR employee acting as the bridge between the students and the university. The students all have their own student initiatives as well, which are closely linked to the Living Room. The Living Room is funded by the university, from the wellbeing budget managed by wellbeing programme manager Rianne van der Zanden. The board members are all in contact with the programme manager. All organized activities that take place in the Living Room are related to wellbeing. All linked initiatives are related to wellbeing, but other students and student associations are also encouraged to host events in the Living Room. In order to do so, students must fill out an application form. The board will then decide whether the event fits the criteria for usage of the room; meaning if the event is in line with the vision of the Living Room.

The association R.S.R. Marcroix FROM THE START... During the Olympic Games in 1924, Charles Ferdinand Pahud the Mortanges won the gold medal with his half-blood gelding Marcroix during an exhausting military. Inspired by Pahud, several gentleman from het R.S.C. decided to set up R.S.R. Marcroix, on October the 16th, 1925. Even after eighty-nine years, this seemed not such a bad idea. THE WONDER HORSE 'MARCROIX' Marcroix was the 'wonder horse', mounted by Lutenant der Huzaren Pahud de Mortanges. Marcroix won at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam (1928) and Los Angeles (1932) a golden meldal on the individuals, and a team golden and silver medal with the Military. Pahud de Mortanges is with four golden and one silver medal still the most successful olympian the Netherlands has ever known. TODAY R.S.R. Marcroix is nowadays "the" association for all student riders in Rotterdam. We ride weekly in our group lesson on Wednesday from 19.00 till 20.00 at the Rotterdamsche Manège. After the lesson we have a drink and a good meal in the society of the Jockey Club. Apart from the lessons we organize outdoor rides, mutual competitions, club competitions of the Jockey Club, members weekend, christmas dinner, drinks, and more. ASSOCIATION R.S.R. Marcroix is a by association of het R.V.S.V., het R.S.C. and the V.N.S., and also a 'club' of the Jockey Club. With regularity there are national (V.N.S.) and international (A.I.E.C.) student dressage- and showjumping competitions. The national competitions are called 'cities meetings', these are organized by different student riding associations within the Netherlands. Summarized the student can participate in activities from: - The Jockey Club (in case the Marcroix-member is also a member of the Jockey Club); - Vereniging Nederlandse Studentruiters (national organisation for student riding associations); - Association Internationale des Étudiants Cavaliers (international organisation for student riding associations).

The meetings take place in one of the rooms of the former Hotel Coomans, located in the then Hoofdsteeg (near the current Blaak). Realizing that a society also includes an association, a list is circulated among the society members on which 27 members sign for this wish. On December 11, 1913, this resulted in the foundation of the Rotterdam Student Corps (RSC). More than two years later, on February 12, 1916, the official foundation of the Rotterdamsche Vrouwen Studenten Vereeniging (RVSV) and its society Mimosa took place. The association has few members, as the number of female students at the NHH is very low. Until mid-2017, both associations lead an independent existence, and during these 100 years they maintain collegial ties of friendship. The RSC and the Society will then move to the second and third floors of a building at Coolsingel 9-b. Almost five years later, on 11 October 1918, the RSC and the Society move into their own four-storey building at Eendrachtsweg 35. The name of the society changes to Sociëteit Hermes. The social room is located on the ground floor. On the first floor a beautifully decorated dining room where a highly subsidized canteen meal is available. This is also accessible to non-members. The NHH has now also moved to the Pieterde Hoochweg. After initially changing housing, the RVSV moves into its own building on Heemraadssingel 329-b on 24 October 1922. The society survives the German bombardment on May 14, 1940. Because of what, in the eyes of the Germans, is indecent verse in the Corpsblad, the Society and RSC are disbanded as “deutschfeindlich” by the German occupier in the spring of 1941. The RVSV will also be lifted afterwards. RSC members continued their meetings secretly during the further war in Bierhandel De Pijp, in the Gaffelstraat. After the liberation, RSC and RVSV move into their respective social buildings again. At the end of the sixties, Erasmus University decided to move to Kralingen in a large-scale new-build complex on Woudestein. Reason why both RSC and RVSV also decide to move to this district. For example, the RVSV moves into new premises on Avenue Concordia 80 on 3 July 1967. The RSC decides to build a new building and moves to its current premises at 55 RobertBaeldestraat on 4 July 1969. After a short stay at Avenue Concordia, the RVSV also decides to move in. to be taken in the same building as that of the RSC, in separate rooms. On August 1, 2017, both associations decided to officially merge as a merged association RSC-RVSV. Society Hermes and Society Mimosa are merged and all spaces are shared. The joint name is now Sociëteit Walhalla.

RSM Student Representation

What is SR? The major goal of the Student Representation (SR) is to look after the interests of the student body through representation on faculty and university level. We are an intermediary between students and the faculty personnel. The SR ensures an exchange of information and feedback between those bodies. This comes to expression in the evaluation, improvement proposals and guarding of the education’s quality at RSM Erasmus University, for both the BA an IBA program. Our course-representatives have the responsibility of facilitating the communication between the students and professor and/or course coordinators. The feedback system is the most important activity to provide further evaluation. Within this system the students are represented by the assigned course-representative who receives feedback from the students in the specific course they are responsible for. The student representatives forward the feedback to the professor to discuss about the subject matters and decide on solutions, if necessary. During each trimester at least two meetings are organized in which course representatives and professors evaluate the course together. At the end of the trimester a report is composed evaluating the feedback from students, compiling it, and finally handing it to the Program Management. This feedback system provides the Program Management with valuable information about professors and course content and consequently enables it to tackle difficulties and take corrective actions immediately. We also improve the education by the Program Advisory. This SR function was added in 2011 and is subdivided into three different commissions: General Studies, 7th Trimester and Examination and Tutoring. Each group consists of one student from every bachelor year, both BA and IBA. Through these commissions, we are able to implement the point of view from students on broader related issues than a single course. We suggest improvements for the Program Management and help them with student related questions. Finally, the SR creates an impact on the educational quality through the presence in different Commissions and Councils: Our aim is to be represented in the Faculty Council, Management Committee, Programme Committee, and the University Council. By participation we are able to communicate feedback between all stakeholders within the faculty and university. This is highly important for several issues that go beyond the scope of one study and therefore cannot be addressed by representatives. Through the activities of the SR we are able to use the common point from the student body to implement it into the decision making of the faculty and university.

The Rotterdam Student Orchestra consists of students and young professionals of 17 to 35 years old. We are looking for enthousiastic musicians that would like to join our ambitious orchestra. We invite you to join one of our rehearsals and try it out for yourself. Don't forget to take your instrument with you!. Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 19:30 to 22:00 with conductor Coen Huisman. The RSO has a broad repertoire ranging from Romantic/Classical to modern. Previously the orchestra played Dvořák, Beethoven, Schumann, Sibelius, Wagner, but also scores from movies and musicals. Activities The RSO is of course not just about music, but also about having a great time together! Every season we have a rehearsal weekend in the Netherlands, and we go on a foreign tour every other year. Our association does not do hazing like other student associations, but we do have a fun intro day with games, speed dating, food and drinks. In addition, we organize a lot of activities every season, such as open stage, concert visits, drinks, board game evenings, dinners and of course the annual Christmas Gala! After every rehearsal on Tuesday, we visit our favorite pub De Haagse Bluf. In short: RSO is super fun! History The Rotterdam Student Orchestra was founded in 2011 by a group of enthousiastic students from the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Even though there was a big orchestra that welcomed students (Rotterdam Youth Symphony Orchestra, RJSO), the average age of members was quite young. To change that, the RJSO and the newly founded RSO collaborated with the Erasmus University to finally give birth on the 13th of February 2012 to a wonderful orchestra full with ambitious passionate members. Coen Huisman Since February 2013 Coen Huisman is the conductor of the Rotterdam Student Orchestra. At an early age, Coen started playing piano and various copper instruments. During his study Maths at the University of Leiden he played in many student orchestras in the region and he started to develop an interest in conducting. From 2010 to 2014, Coen studied orchestra conducting at the Codarts Conservatory in Rotterdam with Hans Leenders. Coen finished his study with an impressive performance of Igor Stravinsky's Pétrouchka.

About RSG The Rotterdamsch Studenten Gezelschap is a student association affiliated with Erasmus University Rotterdam. She has been a household name in Rotterdam student life since 1921. The RSG aims to maintain relations between students, to promote the interests of students and to promote the personal development of its members. What makes RSG unique in Rotterdam is that it stands for equality, freedom and traditions. Terms that are very important to RSG in terms of content. Equivalence means that all members have the same rights, there is no difference in prestige between a freshman or senior. As a freshman you can therefore just as easily take a seat in committees or disputes like the other members. By freedom we mean that you are free to organize your own time on RSG. You decide when you come by and how active you are. You are therefore not obliged to be present at certain times during your membership. This does not mean that nothing is expected of our members, but it is precisely the non-binding that appeals to our members, so that they can all commit themselves in the way that suits them best. RSG has been around for almost 100 years and has undergone many developments in that time. Our rich history has led to many beautiful traditions and mores that are characteristic and unique to our association. It is precisely these traditions that make RSG a truly authentic student association and convert the drinks room into a place where the student vibe predominates. What are we doing? At RSG we hold social events four days a week. The bar is then open to all members. This offers a nice meeting place for our members to come together and have a drink. RSG has a 24-hour permit, so the club remains open as long as it is still fun. In addition to organizing our drinks evenings, there is always a big party in our own party room on Wednesday evenings. In addition, during the year quite a lot is organized in and around the association. The RSG has more than 30 committees that ensure that the association continues to run and that organize many activities for our members. All these committees are staffed by the members of the association, which makes it a great opportunity to gain organizational experience. In addition, it is also very nice to create something beautiful with a group of fellow students. Most RSG members commit themselves to one or more of these committees during their membership. Who do we do that for? Anyone who studies at a WO or HBO institution can become a member of RSG and enjoy everything we have to offer as an association. Our members are therefore welcome at all activities that we organize. We are also a real social club, so conviviality is of paramount importance to us. On the other hand, we are also well aware that all our members are students. Completing your studies therefore also occupies a very important place in our association. RSG students often help each other with things they encounter during their studies. RSG is there for its members. A student association with historical traditions and with the freedom and space for self-development that today's students are looking for. Privacy Policy RSG The introduction period in Rotterdam went smoothly: Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, five student associations and a sports association have signed a code of conduct to that end. The RSG is one of the signatories. The new code of conduct describes the standards and values that apply during the introduction period. In this way, it offers the associations and their members a clear framework for behavior during the introduction period. For example, the code explicitly states what the association's board of directors entails and what the guarantees are when it comes to personal integrity, health and hygiene. In addition, the code contains the agreement that prospective members must be properly enabled to follow education. Associations must also appoint confidential counselors and report incidents immediately. The code of conduct was drawn up by the official student social associations in Rotterdam (the RSC/RVSV, the Laurentius, the SSR-R, the RSG and NSR) and the student sports association ARSR Skadi, in collaboration with Erasmus University and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. The Rotterdam Committee for Higher Education (Higher Education) Student Social Societies monitors compliance with the code of conduct.

About us Rotterdam Student Rugby Club is a student rugby club in Rotterdam. The club colors are red-green, from the colors of Rotterdam (green-white), and those of the borough of Kralingen-Crooswijk (red-yellow). The club’s logo consists of 2 bear cubs that hold the sacred oval ball. Since 2008, the RSRC has its own clubhouse, the Bears Cave, at Lucie Vuylstekeweg 40. In addition to its own clubhouse, the RSRC has three men’s teams and a sevensteam. A Young Dogs team is also set up every year, a team exclusively for new inexperienced members. This team plays a number of (very entertaining) matches against other inexperienced players from student clubs in the Netherlands. At RSRC there is room for all kinds of rugby playerThe s: whether you want to play performance-oriented rugby or just play a game of rugby just for fun, it’s all possible. You indicate what you want, and we join in with that. There is always a relaxed atmosphere within the RSRC. This is reflected in the many activities that are on the schedule every year: Trip, the Dies Natalis (birthday of the club), the Christmas dinner, the New Year’s drink and much more. These activities are still being visited by former members and of course the new members are also here. There is training on Tuesday and Thursday, at 7:30 PM. Come along, rugby experience certainly isn’t a requirement! After the training there is always a delicious meal, prepared by our CB. Matches are played on Sundays. When all teams play at home there is a Super Sunday, whose third halves are always (or never) rembered. History The RSRC was founded on May 2, 1968 as a port of the RSC, and has since been exclusively for students. Despite the fact that the association was only founded in 1968, a competition of Rotterdam students against DSR-C (the student team from Delft) was mentioned in a Rotterdam newspaper about the first world war: “On the field of Sparta in Spangen we saw a rugby match yesterday between the fifteen of the Rotterdam and Delft students. The field was hard and covered with a thin layer of snow. However, this was no problem for these young people to play their game. Rugby appears to be a nice, hefty and really masculine game. Those who are touchy, stay off the pitch! It is sometimes rough and the game is certainly not good for those who can not take a beating. Imagine that when a football match was so smothered, pulled and pushed! The players would tear each other apart, and the referee’s body was found the next morning in a nearby ditch! At rugby, however, the most horrible things happen in the fullest of kindness and the attacker, who with the ball under the arm almost scorestry, but has his leg lifted just before the line, stands up, laughs and compliments his opponent with his brave effort. We have followed quite a bit of the Rotterdam-Delft game yesterday and firmly believe that this game has a future in the Netherlands. We advise the leaders of the rugby movement, however, to make the rules a bit more known. (…) “

Our history begins on January 28, 1918 ; when Societas Studiosorum Reformatorum Roterodamensis was founded by seven reformed students. SSR departments were located in every student city throughout the country, now also in Rotterdam. The association was renamed the Union, and it prospered. Over time, however, the associations in the different cities began to grow further apart. Could the Union withstand the test of time? Ties with Erasmus University In 1933 SSR-R. recognized by the Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool, the predecessor of the Erasmus University Rotterdam, which means that SSR-R. from then on, he was always invited to attend official university affairs. This recognition ensured that contacts with other associations were strengthened and SSS-R. began to profile itself more outwardly. In the years leading up to World War II, SSR-R grew. as an association and, despite the threat of war, the life of a fraternity flourished. In addition, there was great concern among student associations about the growing support of the NSB among students. As a result, the associations joined forces to clarify on what grounds they rejected the NSB.

In September 2012, the bachelor programme for Nanobiology was started. Nanobiology is an interdisciplinary programme where students use fundamental knowledge of mathematics and physics to fully understand the complexity of biology on the nanoscale. Students of this programme get the unique opportunity to experience the expertises of two different universities in two different cities: Delft and Rotterdam. As we speak, Nanobiology has grown into a fully developed study programme: in September 2017 the first Master students have received their degree and are now officially the first nanobiologists in the world. Obviously, a study programme is not complete without its own study association. Therefore the study association for Nanobiology Hooke was founded on November 20 2014. She takes care of students’ interests and has the following tasks in order to achieve this goal. Firstly, the quality of education is one of our main fields of interest. Under the supervision of the commissioner of education, course evaluations are held every octal in order to give students the opportunity to give feedback on the programme. This feedback is discussed with the relevant professors, the board of studies and the programme director. In this way, S.V.N.B. Hooke can monitor the programme and give advice on how to improve the programme. Besides looking after our education, the study association organises multiple activities where students can broaden themselves in order to prepare for a career in the Nanobiology field. Lunch lectures are given by researchers and external organisations and students regularly visit research institutions and companies in order to give them a better view on the field. Furthermore, S.V.N.B. Hooke organises multiple workshops and study trips for her students. In that way, the association forms the key link between Nanobiology students and the field, so that it can also help with finding internships and job offers. Lastly, S.V.N.B. Hooke regularly organises social acitivities, which improve the social cohesion between the students. At the beginning of the academic year there is an introduction weekend where upcoming Nanobiology students can get to know each other and the association in a relaxed atmosphere. During the year, many other activities take place: a members’ dinner, a skiing or surfing trip and weekly drinks in our own bar. These activities provide a break from all the studying and an opportunity to strengthen the friendship between students.

S.v. Criminologie In Actie

History Long, long ago, in the year 2001, there were once a number of brilliant students who studied criminology at Erasmus University Rotterdam. These students had a plan. The plan to set up an association. A study association that is. Not just any study, no: criminology! The idea of the study association Criminologie In Actie was born in December 2001 in Antwerp, Belgium. The founders of the association attended a conference on diamond smuggling organized by the Dutch Society for Criminology with a number of other students. The congress was a success. Afterwards, the founders of the (as yet non-existent) CIA were asked by a number of people from Erasmus University Rotterdam to start a study association for criminology students at this university. Criminology is a multidisciplinary yet specialist field of study. Students who choose this course can be described as highly motivated. They generally have an insatiable 'hunger' for information and activities in the field of criminology. At the time of the founding of Criminologie In Actie, the study was new at Erasmus University. The association that was to be established had to offer students something criminologically interesting outside the lectures and textbooks and to bridge the gap between theory and practice. An enthusiastic team of students was put together and the association was set up. Today, the association is led by six different students each year. With the establishment of the study association, a number of ideas have been beautifully shaped over the years. An example of this is the CIA magazine, which has received much attention from its inception and continues to be read with enthusiasm by members, educators and others to this day. In the magazine you will find news about the association and its activities, interviews, items about study and articles about relevant scientific research. Over the years, the magazine has become an indispensable facet of the association. However, things like the very popular annual study trip are also an example of the far-reaching development that the association has gone through. In short, in recent years the foundations have been laid for the study association as it is today. For years, we have worked professionally to professionalize the association and to expand its number of contacts. Today Criminologie In Actie has a considerable number of active members, and the association is characterized by its informal atmosphere in which professional results are nevertheless achieved. A large number of activities are organized every year and this enables CIA to achieve its objectives. CIA through the years After the first year, in which the association was founded by Karin de Jong, Edwin de Wit, Paul Tjiam and Laura Rastovac, the CIA had around 350 members. Within a year it turned out to be possible to bind sociology students and lawyers to the association in addition to the criminology students. At the end of the second year, there were already 400 association members with only 200 criminology students at Erasmus University. Major events such as the Interurban Criminology Day already took place in the second year. With 120 students present, the first edition of this congress was a great success and to this day the study associations involved still manage to organize an equally successful and interesting program. There were also special excursions to the technical investigation department, the University of Brussels and various large companies. In the third year of the study association's existence, the study trip finally really crossed the border (no, Brussels is not 'real' after all): CIA traveled to Krakow! After two successful editions of the Beerfreax party, a third edition was also organized in collaboration with mother association JFR: a dazzling evening full of (gabber?!) music. During the fourth year of the association's life, after years of saving, for the first time a hefty expense was made for the members: the first CIA almanac was published. The study trip went to Portugal in year four, where the national drug policy (a complete decriminalization of all drugs) was examined. One of the highlights this year was the return of Professor Wouter Buikhuizen, who came to the Netherlands at the request of Professor Henk van de Bunt after a 26-year absence from the criminology scene to give a guest lecture for our students. After the first few years, in which the foundations were laid for the study association as it is now, continuity has been guaranteed by concluding major sponsorship contracts and holding successful events such as Beerfreax and celebrating the CIA's first lustrum. During this anniversary, Europol was visited, the first real CIA gala took place and a spectacular debate was organized about the lifting of the brothel ban. In recent years, Criminologie In Actie has also focused on 'empowering' criminology students: attention was paid to 'Working in Science' and business days, former student days and career orientation days were frequently organised. Also, the CIA magazine, which is printed in black-on-white-and-blue, has been highly professionalized over the years. The magazine has evolved from a double-folded A4 with a circulation of 150 copies (thanks in part to major sponsorship contracts) into, in the words of Professor René van Swaaningen, a real 'glossy'. The magazine is published every six months and the circulation is now 750 copies. Governing through the years During the past years of the association, a lot has been shifted with the available board positions. In addition to the permanent positions of chairman, secretary and treasurer, various other positions have existed, such as the 'Internal Commissioner' and the 'Media Commissioner'. There were boards consisting of four, five and six persons. The current six-person board of directors has only been maintained since the association's sixth year. In addition to organizational issues such as the above, joys and sorrows were shared by the board members within the various boards. A board year is a year of ups and downs, as Nienke de Munck (editor-in-chief of the 12th board) describes below: “In the past year, as editor-in-chief, I was primarily involved with everything related to CIA Magazine and its digitization. In addition, I helped organize the Professional Orientation Day that took place in Rotterdam during my year. I also worked with a committee on the renewal of the CIA's statutes and by-laws. You learn a lot in a board year. You have to work with your board mates that you may not know very well beforehand, you attend meetings and chair meetings of your own committee, you learn to lead and delegate, you master the art of planning in the shortest possible time. points and of course you gain detailed experience about everything that has to do with your specific function. In addition, you experience a lot of fun things. With monthly drinks, study trips, city trips, parties and Constitution drinks from other boards, you get to know fellow students better, make friendships for life and visit places you might never have been otherwise. Of course, not every moment during your board year is bright and sunny. You can sometimes have to deal with some setbacks, and at times it all seems to get too busy. But at the end of the year you can breathe a sigh of relief: the six of you did it. And then all the fantastic moments dominate!” Of course, not every moment during your board year is bright and sunny. You can sometimes have to deal with some setbacks, and at times it all seems to get too busy. But at the end of the year you can breathe a sigh of relief: the six of you did it. And then all the fantastic moments dominate!” Of course, not every moment during your board year is bright and sunny. You can sometimes have to deal with some setbacks, and at times it all seems to get too busy. But at the end of the year you can breathe a sigh of relief: the six of you did it. And then all the fantastic moments dominate!” In short: the previous boards led the association with pleasure, love, blood, sweat and tears and the current board does that now.

‘You can speak freely. You are urged to start your personal learning process, which really makes you grow. Taking charge of yourself … I really enjoyed it’. Better education for students, by students Our connection to the CLI Students-for-Students (S4S) is part of the Community for Learning and Innovation (CLI), which was founded to ensure our university offers education to a new generation of students, which is catered to their needs. For teachers it is important to stay inspired and ahead of the game. The CLI helps encouraging teachers to keep learning, and to improve their professional development and growth. What we do Students-for-Students (S4S) stimulates and facilitates students’ projects which contribute to improving the quality of education for students. S4S is funded by governmental resources, which are freed up by the abolition of the Dutch basic student grant (“basisbeurs”) in 2015, and are now transferred directly to the universities to invest in the improvement of education. By enabling students to contribute to the improvement of their education and supporting them in making their education future-proof, S4S brings these resources back to the students. Our story The S4S Support Platform of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) originates from an initiative proposal by University Council student member Daniel Sieczkowski and is inspired by Prof. Dr. Gert-Jan Kleinrensink, who has been running a similar and tremendously successful S4S support platform at the Erasmus MC - called the Genootschap voor Extra-curriculaire Rotterdamse Studentenprojecten (GERS) - since many years.
