Starting university can be an exciting yet daunting experience, and as summer is approaching the start of your first academic year is starting to get in sight. Although your first lecture is still months away, what are some things that you can actually start doing? Here are some tips on how to make the most of your summer and set yourself up for success.

Familiarize yourself with the campus (stress-reducer!): take a virtual or in-person tour of your university to get a sense of the layout and key locations. This can help reduce stress and anxiety when you first arrive.

Connect with future classmates: join Facebook groups, attend online orientation events, download Uni-Life or connect with your university's social media pages to connect with fellow students before you start. This will help you build a sense of community before you even arrive on campus.

Brush up on academic skills: we all know that a long summer can make us feel a little dull. Take advantage of online resources such as Khan Academy, Coursera or edX to brush up on academic skills. This will help you start off sharp.

Create a budget: university life can be expensive, so it's important to create a budget to manage your finances. Starting with any financial surprises can be a real stress factor, so consider setting up a savings account to help manage expenses such as textbooks, rent, and food.

Consider extracurricular activities: take the time to research and consider extracurricular activities and clubs that interest you. Platforms such as Uni-Life are great for this, and can help you meet new people, develop new skills and add value to your university experience.

Take care of your physical and mental health: start good habits such as eating healthy, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep. The first few weeks of university are typically intense, so consider developing a self-care routine that works for you to help manage stress and maintain balance in your life.

In summary, the summer before your first year at university is the perfect time to start preparing for this exciting new chapter in your life. Make sure to enjoy it, but also to find enough time to prepare everything.
