This Master Thesis topic consists of a detailed feasibility study for the decarbonisation of sea transport at the Kökar Island, a municipality in the Åland archipelago, Finland. The study will evaluate the impacts of electrifying ferry transportation on the existing grid infrastructure, considering aspects such as different charging schemes, grid scenarios, and characteristics for electrified ferries. The methods in this study will be considered in the scale-up and replication to other islands in the European Union. The thesis work itself consists of: Understanding the requirements for the electrification of sea transport from a technical and social perspective The development of a grid model for the Kökar Island electricity network, both using software tools (Pandapower, Simulink) and in RTDS (real time digital simulator) The simulation of various scenarios using the RTDS model in the IntelligentEnergy Testbed laboratory environment. There is also the possibility to explore other aspects of electrifying sea transport, such as business models, intelligent charging algorithms, or optimised microgrid operations, as additional tasks in this Master Thesis. The work will be performed in the Smart Grids research team in VTT offices in Espoo, Finland, as part of the Horizon Europe LocalRES project ( The planned starting date is 2 May 2023, but an earlier date is also possible.
