We are now looking for Master Thesis Worker to join our Gasification and syngas processing team. Join us - and let's make an impact together! VTT develops chemical recycling technologies to improve the recycling rates of plastic waste. Our team operates world-leading research and technology infrastructure and aims to develop gasification and pyrolysis technologies, including the related downstream processes. VTT can integrate chemical recycling technologies with the following downstream units. The development work is carried out at a lab scale in Otaniemi and at a pilot scale at VTT's Bioruukki piloting facility in Kivenlahti, both located in Espoo. The chemical recycling process produces valuable gas streams (e.g., syngas, ethylene, hydrogen) that require various processing steps (e.g., absorption, and reactive adsorption) before the gas quality fulfills the industrial standards and can be utilized in industrial processes. We are looking for a Master Thesis Worker who is interested in working on projects which develop these sustainable technologies and processes. As a Master's Thesis Worker, you will: In this position, your main objective is to participate in the development work of chemical recycling of plastic waste. More specifically, you will work with gas streams containing olefin and hydrogen gasses originating from the chemical recycling of plastics. Your thesis topic will focus on gas processing with the topic: Catalytic systems in the purification of hydrogen and olefin-rich gasses. Theoretical, experimental, and analytical approaches are required in your work. The work starts with a literature study, following the production of catalyst materials and experimental verification of the produced materials. You will learn to produce novel materials, analyze the produced materials and test the performance of the materials in realistic reaction conditions. Your thesis work supports later R&D stages and the scale-up of the system. Your goal is to study the phenomena related to gas processing steps that are needed before the unprocessed gas streams can be fed into industrial systems. Some experience in chemistry and a willingness to learn different sorption processes and chemical reactions are the keys to being successful in your work. The practical tasks include: Literature study to assess the possibilities to remove unwanted components from the produced gas streams. Hands-on experimental work at the lab scale (e.g., production of catalyst materials and testing of reactor systems) is needed for verifying that the proposed system can achieve the expected targets. Communication of your results both in oral presentations and in written reports. Who we are looking for: To succeed in this role, you should have a background in chemistry. The willingness to learn and combine skills in material production and reactor testing is seen as an asset.
