A bias is a tendency, inclination, or prejudice toward or against something or someone. Have you ever experienced it? How did that make you feel? Do you want to learn more about your own unconscious bias? Join us for an informal evening with Pysa Delft to share and reflect through engaging games. Bias is a term that refers to the action of supporting or opposing a particular person or thing in an unfair way, because of allowing personal opinions to influence your judgment. Bias can be conscious but also unconscious, in which case the individuals are not aware that they are experiencing bias towards others. It has become more and more common to talk about such topics. Have you ever encountered situations where people were biased? How did that make you feel? Could you respond immediately? Unconscious bias is triggered by our brain automatically making quick judgments and assessments without even realizing, and it can have a significant influence on our attitudes and behaviors, especially towards other people. Do you want to learn more about your own unconscious bias in order to reduce them? This evening is all about dealing with situations like this and sharing your personal stories (if you like) in an informal and intimate setting via reflective games. Dress up as your favorite superhero of master-villain, and steal the night (or the moon) at the next BSS Ballroom party! Before the heroes and villains face off in an awesome night of dancing, we start by bringing everyone together with a small group dance workshop. Free Do you know what you need in order to be sane in this world? And even if you imagine you’ve satisfied all your needs – could you still be sane if the society around you is not? I think it’s healthy to question society from time to time. To question our whole way of life, like the norms and values, the pressures, obstacles, and the goals, expectations, and outcomes that you face while living in a society. Let’s sketch it out together: what is society’s ideal image of a sane person? And, conversely, what do we think is a sane society? Do our ideals match the reality? And do sane individuals make a sane society, or does a sane society lead to sane individuals? Consider: in the Netherlands, nearly 1 in 10 adults has been prescribed antidepressants. Nearly 50% of all adults (18+) has experienced one or more mental illnesses at some point in their lives. 26% of people over the age of 15 experience loneliness. One in six workers experience burnout symptoms. There might be more statistics on the distribution of things like existential angst, unhappiness, stress, anxiety, phobias, trauma, and so on, but you get the picture. And the trend seems to be that things are getting worse. Knowing this, do you think we can say that we live in a sane society? Or, if not, do you have any idea of how to get there together? disclaimer: this is a philosophical discussion about the phenomenon of mental health in society. En les escriptures del jo, el narrador i/o el protagonista utilitzen la literatura per mostrar-se o amagar-se. I no ho fan tan sols a les novel·les, els relats o els poemes, sinó també a través dels reportatges, diaris, cròniques, epistolaris… En aquest curs llegirem diferents obres en què els límits de la ficció i la realitat són (sovint volgudament) difusos. No es tracta només de veure la realitat a la ficció sinó com la ficció confirma la nostra realitat i la nostra identitat.

Ervaar de Hortus tussen 9 en 17 december op een hele ander manier: in het donker. De botanische tuin is ’s avonds een van de donkerste plekken in het hart van Leiden. Tijdens de Winter Wonderdagen is de Hortus tot 18 uur geopend en wordt de tuin vanaf 16 uur sprookjesachtig verlicht. Bezoekers kunnen een botanische lichtkunstpresentatie bewonderen, de grachten verkennen tijdens het zaklampvissen (9, 13 en 16 december) of lichtgevende planten ontdekken op de UV-lichtexcursie. Opwarmen kan in de Tropische Kassen of met een warme glühwein of chocolademelk bij de speciale to go-stand van het Hortus Grand Café. Concerten ‘Standing Naked’ op 15 en 17 december in Utrecht en Amsterdam! De Utrechtse Studenten Cantorij o.l.v. Fokko Oldenhuis treedt in december op met een nieuw, spannend programma: ‘Standing Naked’. Bijzonder aan dit programma is dat er vijf wereldpremières plaatsvinden: gloednieuwe stukken die geschreven zijn dóór en vóór studenten. Deze composities zijn elk op hun eigen manier een reactie op de moderne samenleving. Zo beschrijft Marijn Eigenhuis’ compositie het concept ‘oorlog’ en de aard van de mens, en gaat Felix Hirns stuk over eenzaamheid en contact maken. De werken van Davin Mosterd en Karel Stegeman geven elk een draai aan het Duitse romantische idioom, en Koen Leenaers’ compositie geeft aan de hand van Hebreeuwse tekst en inventieve woordschilderingen een beeld van het ontstaan van de mensheid tot nu. Hiertegenover staan madrigalen van Straesser (1993), waaronder ‘What have I to fear?’ en ‘Standing Naked’. Deze werken, met dagboekteksten van Dag Hammarskjöld, gaan over jezelf blootgeven en moed; eigenschappen die we ook aan de jonge componisten kunnen toeschrijven. Diepenbrock en Andriessen laten met hun lichte klanken en virtuositeit een kant zien van de Nederlandse muziektraditie die we niet eerder tegenkwamen, en samen met Sweelincks charmante psalm 150 vormen zij een uitstekend voorbeeld voor de aanstormende componisten. Al met al zorgt de samenkomst van jong en oud, van vernieuwing en traditie, kwetsbaarheid en durf voor een rijkgevuld programma dat je niet wilt missen!
